Most BMW shops in Portland can replace a water pump. Very few can clone a DME, recover a CAS module that died mid-update, or program a key without sending the car to the dealership on a flatbed. BayaniBuilt does all of it in-house — and it's usually a fraction of what BMW quotes for a new module.
What is a DME and why would it need cloning?
The DME (Digital Motor Electronics) is the engine computer. On the N54 it's the MSD80 or MSD81; on the N55 the MEVD17; on the N52 the MSV70/MSV80. DMEs fail from water intrusion, voltage spikes, bad flashes and plain age. BMW's answer is a new DME programmed to your VIN — often $2,000–$3,500+ plus a dealer programming session.
Cloning is the alternative: we read the full contents of your original DME (or, if it's dead, reconstruct what's needed), write it into a good used unit, and match the ISN so it pairs with your existing CAS and keys. The car sees the same DME it always had. No dealer, no new keys, no waiting on BMW's servers.

Symptoms that are usually a DME or CAS problem
- Crank, no start with no communication to the DME
- "Key not detected" / immobilizer active with a known-good key
- Car died during a software update at another shop or with a DIY tool
- No-crank after a jump-start or battery swap
- DME won't accept a flash / tune, or shows a corrupt checksum
- Multiple unrelated modules dropping off the bus
If a shop tells you the car needs a new DME and a new CAS and new keys, get a second opinion. That combination is rarely necessary.
What it costs
It depends on the module and whether the original can still be read, so we quote every job individually — but the comparison is simple. A dealer DME replacement means a new module at BMW's price plus a programming session, and usually starts north of $2,500. Two recent examples
E90 335i — MSD80 to MSD81 upgrade and clone recovery. The car needed an MSD81 for tuning support. We pulled both modules to the bench, did full reads with a HexProg II, extracted the ISN from the original, and patched the MSD81's binary so the car's CAS and keys accepted it as if it had always been there. No new keys, no dealer, no tow.
CAS3 corrupted during a failed Autel firmware update. The update died mid-write and left the CAS unresponsive — no crank, no key recognition. The dealer answer to that is a new CAS plus keys plus programming. We worked through it at the EEPROM level, cleared the service-mode flags the failed update left behind, and brought the original module back. Same CAS, same keys, car back on the road.
Why this matters when you're choosing a BMW shop
Module problems are where the dealership makes its money and where general shops give up. Having this capability in-house means BayaniBuilt can finish a job that would otherwise end with your car on a tow truck to the dealer.
